Why I bought the most famous drum machine of all time
Просмотров 56 тыс.Месяц назад
Like most people, I've always wanted to own an original Roland TR-808 but it's always been the wrong price or the wrong time or both. Earlier this year my time finally came. I wanted to make a video showing why it's still a very relevant and useful instrument in a modern studio and that it's not just purely about nostalgia, whilst that obviously plays a part! 0:00 Intro Jam 1:38 Individal Outs ...

A look at some of the equipment used by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori to score Halo: Combat Evolved, released in 2001. Huge thank you to Neo Te Aika, Frostbyte, Booey, Noelle, Yewlyn, Python Blue, Jafet Meza, RenSFX, meowsandstuff, Fleetwire, AtlyxMusic, PunkGalFuryn and anyone else at Project Odyssey for their incredible work identifying many of the sounds that I showed in this video....

A look at the revolutionary Roland MC-8 from 1977 which was one of the earliest microprocessor-controlled digital sequencers. Around 200 of these units were made and they were extremely expensive. As I've covered the history of this unit several times, I thought it would be interesting to follow in the footsteps of a band that made significant use of the MC-8, which was Yellow Magic Orchestra. ...

Colossus: A once in a generation synthesizer
Alex: thank you for doing an incredible job with your videos!
I have samples of 808. In my sampler. In case I need to use them. ❤
Ive got a dremel router. 👍
Did you say "womble"?
I'd like to confirm that I have no idea what you're talking about. ❤
How exactly did you access my bank account?
I never liked gates I prefer a stile. 😅
I've got one in it's box with the strap and Yamaha wall wart. It is a powerful little synth. There seems to be fewer around, these days. I think they've been collected and owners see no point in selling them on for the prices they sell for.
I'd like a receipt please.
I have one for sale
This synth featured in a scene in the movie Xanadu alongside an Oberheim 8-voice synth.
Is your drum track a sample looped or what plug-in you using?
The gear, the original music, the skills at playing many different instruments, and very important : the humor ! What's not to ove about this video. Thank you Alex !
Cheers!
What about Italian weddings?
❤
It's a very good synthesizer. It sound very good. <3 PS: 00:12:13: THIS is really fun to watch! 🥰 Very sympathic.
This is a synth I never heard of. Thought I knew all the big ones that were ever used. This is def an intriguing instrument!
Love that korg jam 🔥 any chance of a bit more info on how you setup those sub mixers?
This isn't Banks' "old" synth, LOL! This was one of his 'new' synths. His OLD synth was the Roland RS202, the Mellotron, the miniMoog, and other 70's synths.
So I just want to clarify... The Roland System-100M is your favourite synth? You'd never be able to tell based upon this video. You *barely* mention it at all!
My mate and studio partner who has loads of unobtanium had just got a Trident MKII in and an ARP Quadra. We put both through their paces. The Quadra promptly went up for sale.
Short Trigger Disco were huge with their minor hit 'Cut Your Hair, Cut The Rug' at the Barnet Ritzy's in 1978.
Great to see the full historie of ARP! It’s sad to call it “historie of” because I think it would be awesome to still have the ARP brand functional today. I’m happy with the clone synths of the ARP 2500, 2600 and the Odessey you can buy today, they’re so great and they sound awesome. Keep on with the good work Alex👍🏻
Loved that WOW sound, almost had a vocoder sound to it, very cool!
Just wanted to say your "COMPUPHONIC" voice scared the shit out of me. I put on a bluetooth sleep mask that I have a habit of relaxing to so i can just focus on the sound. Sounded like it was in my bedroom lol.
Absurd vintage dork? 😂😊 Loved the semi-modular fun. I have a whole new perspective of the Trident now. Thanks for sharing! Also, the Trident looks great with the 808!
Yeah, 808 buttons on the Trident!
When can I spend a night 🤔
Great video Alex! (again :) ) Korg released a cheaper alternative to the Trident : the Korg DL 50 known as the Delta. I own both, and I must admit I could not sell my Delta when I got the Trident. Has its own charm...definitely worth checking IMHO. Peace
This thang is a freaking masterpiece ✨️ 😍 👏
Bravo!
I observed a minor miss on the JunoX...they saved a shortcut and didn't put in up/down buttons or scroll-buttons, to spare the rotating encoder, which is always prone to heavy wear. On older synths they used to put in both, it's a nasty trend in the synth world to get rid of the "scroll-buttons" as the encoder back-up. What a pity!
I've only played with Full Bucket's Tricent and previous emulations but I always thought the Trident architecture is magnificient, just quite difficult to mix. It's too easy to end up with a heavily layered sound that overpowers everything. Good if you need a soundtrack-in-a-box though.
Using the Full Bucket Tricent plugin is probably as close I'll ever get to the Korg Trident, unless Behringer puts it on their list of clones. Come on Behringer! People want this!
Your videos are always a joy! ♥ Thanks!
Great video and catchy riffs/songs as always, Alex, and thanks for shedding some light on a synth that I didn't really know much about until now. I appreciate how creative Korg was in getting the most out of those synth voices across the three sections, and those sounds you got from the back panel connections were pretty wild!
+1 for the joystick. Love it on the Sigma. Thx Alex!
12:44 This fill-in from the KR55. I still remember it very well. :)
5:11 You alright, Phil?
dream synth
Inspiringly informative and mesmerizingly musical demo of a nostalgic memory synth, Alex. You diddit again. Thumbs up. Keep 'em coming!
Cheers!
i’m here for this kinda video all day long
Woah. You have a twin?
Pair of Balls.
Well I still long for the day when someone decides to do actual playing instead of making elctronic beats with arpeggiators and sample loups then turning knobs.
There's several in this very video. 49:08 46:00 44:39 43:21 35:02 30:07

Was this intended to compete with the Jup-8? They both came out the same year, And Korg usually offers a cheaper version than Roland.
Came out a year before the Jupiter-8, so probably not. I imagine it was more to compete with the Prophet and OB-X.
Large Nation - Great for a 90s cartoon The intro would have lyrics, Levy & Saban style, and the outro would be that instrumental.
not only are your demonstrations superbly crafted, they are exactly the right length , never over indulgent, and vids do not require skipping!
Thanks!
wow your grooves are top notch
